Buses replace Sidcup line and Catford Thameslink trains on Sunday 4 October, then no trains via Lewisham after 23:15 from 5 to 8 October. Roadworks listed.
Lewisham’s traffic runs on four loaded main roads: the A2, A20, A21 and the A205 South Circular. One burst main or one weekend possession reshapes the whole borough’s journeys. What is disrupting travel right now (checked 27 September 2026)
Sunday 4 October: buses on the Sidcup line, and no Thameslink trains through Catford
Two separate closures land on the same Sunday.
Buses replace trains between Lewisham, Hither Green and Dartford via Sidcup. Engineering work closes all lines between Lewisham and Hither Green, and between Sidcup and Dartford (National Rail):
- accessible replacement buses run between Lewisham and Dartford via Sidcup
- Charing Cross to Dartford and Gravesend trains via Sidcup do not run
- Charing Cross trains to Hayes and to Sevenoaks run, but do not call at Lewisham
- extra trains run between Charing Cross and Gravesend via Bexleyheath
- tickets are accepted on the P4, 284 and 122 buses between Ladywell and Lewisham
No trains run via Denmark Hill, which takes out the Catford loop (National Rail):
- Thameslink trains between Blackfriars or Victoria and Sevenoaks divert via Beckenham Junction, so Crofton Park, Catford and Bellingham have no trains
- replacement buses run between Herne Hill and Beckenham Junction via Catford, calling at all stations except Nunhead and Ravensbourne
- the Windrush line has no service between Clapham Junction and Canada Water, with buses instead
- tickets are accepted on the P12, 78 and 484 buses between Denmark Hill and Lewisham
Monday 5 to Thursday 8 October: no trains via Lewisham after about 23:15
Overnight work in the Lewisham area closes some lines from about 23:15 each night until the end of service (National Rail):
- no trains call at Lewisham, and none run between Lewisham and Hayes
- the last train to Hayes each evening is the 22:21 from Charing Cross
- trains via Bexleyheath do not run or divert via Sidcup
- replacement buses run between Lewisham and Hayes, Lewisham and Dartford via Woolwich, and London Bridge and Dartford or Gravesend via Bexleyheath
- single late buses leave Lewisham for Gravesend via Sidcup at 00:50 and for Orpington at 01:10
10 and 11 October: the Charing Cross weekend closes New Cross, St Johns and Hither Green
The follow-up weekend from the summer’s £20 million Charing Cross scheme is bigger for Lewisham than first billed. No trains run to or from Charing Cross or Waterloo East all weekend, with work between Charing Cross and New Cross closing lines across the south east (National Rail; Network Rail; Southeastern engineering map):
- New Cross, St Johns, Hither Green, Lee, Mottingham, Grove Park, Elmstead Woods and Chislehurst close all weekend, served by replacement buses only; Sundridge Park and Bromley North have no Sunday service anyway
- replacement buses run Greenwich to Sidcup via New Cross and Lewisham, and Lewisham to Orpington calling at all stations
- Hayes line trains run between Victoria and Hayes instead, and Grove Park line trains between Victoria and Sevenoaks
- the Sidcup line drops to two trains an hour, between Sidcup and Dartford only
- a reduced service runs between London Bridge and Cannon Street
The same weekend is the Catford Arts Trail, so expect busier buses around Catford and Hither Green.
If you paid extra to get around the 22-day summer closure, Southeastern’s refund form stays open until Wednesday 30 September (Southeastern).
17 and 18 October: buses Lewisham to Orpington and Sidcup
Work between St Johns, Hither Green and Dartford closes the lines from Lewisham to Orpington and from Lewisham to Sidcup all weekend (National Rail; Southeastern engineering map):
- Hither Green, Lee, Grove Park, Mottingham, Elmstead Woods and Chislehurst close, served by replacement buses running Lewisham to Orpington and Lewisham to Sidcup
- Sidcup line trains between Charing Cross and Dartford do not run
- Hayes line trains keep running via Lewisham, every 30 minutes, so Lewisham station itself stays open
- Charing Cross to Sevenoaks trains run non-stop between Lewisham and Petts Wood
Roads: new gas and water works in Catford and Brockley
All from TfL’s road disruption feed, checked 27 September:
- A205 Brownhill Road: temporary traffic lights both ways at the Stainton Road junction for gas works, until 1 October. This is the South Circular through Catford, so expect queues at peak times.
- A20 Lewisham Way: southbound lane restrictions at the Breakspears Road junction for Thames Water works, until 30 September.
- A21 Rushey Green: the northbound lane is closed at the Ringstead Road junction for SGN gas works, until 25 October.
- A21 Molesworth Street: westbound lane restrictions at the Lewisham High Street junction for TfL’s junction improvement works, until 6 November. They were originally listed to end on 16 September.
Just over the border in Greenwich, on routes Lewisham drivers use:
- A205 Academy Road: temporary signals at Shooters Hill Road for SGN works, until 2 October
- A205 Well Hall Road: temporary lights at Downman Road for emergency water works, and multi-way signals at Arsenal Road for Thames Water, both until 29 September
- A20 Sidcup Road: lane one closed eastbound at Larchwood Road for emergency Thames Water works, until 28 September
What has ended
The Lewisham station and Bexleyheath line closure of 26 and 27 September is over. The Eltham Road westbound closure at the A20 has left TfL’s feed, and so have the A20 Sidcup Road overnight closures, the Baring Road overnight resurfacing and the A2 New Cross Road signal works.

Who actually runs Lewisham’s roads
Knowing who owns a road tells you who to check, and who to blame.
- TfL runs the red routes, and in Lewisham that is all four main corridors: the A2 (New Cross Road and Lewisham Way), the A20 (Loampit Vale and Lee High Road), the A21 (Molesworth Street, Rushey Green and Bromley Road) and the A205 South Circular (Catford Road, Brownhill Road, St Mildreds Road and neighbours). All four are designated GLA roads in the GLA Roads Designation Order 2000. TfL notes its red routes are only 5% of London’s roads but carry up to 30% of the traffic (TfL red routes).
- Lewisham Council runs everything else: the residential streets, and road markings on all streets except red routes. Its road maintenance contractor is F M Conway (01732 600 700) and its street lighting contractor is Milestone Infrastructure (0800 028 5986). Utility works by Thames Water, gas and power companies are, in the council’s words, “not fully under our control” (Lewisham Council roadworks).
- National Highways runs the motorways beyond the boundary, including the M25 (TfL, roads responsibilities).

Lewisham’s own website keeps no live works list. It points residents at TfL’s tools, and they are the right ones:

It is a map that loads in your browser rather than a page we can read and summarise here, so residential-street and utility works are the ones we could not check for you. Search it yourself for anything off the four main roads.

Two big schemes to watch
Catford’s A205 realignment is dead; a smaller package replaces it. The long-planned scheme to move the South Circular away from Catford’s town centre lost its central government funding, and the council’s new Catford Town Centre Business Plan, approved by Mayor and Cabinet on 9 September 2026, says the proposal “can no longer be pursued”. In its place comes a targeted package within the existing road layout: a new crossing by the Catford Bridge Tavern, better crossings on Brownhill Road, public realm around the Broadway Theatre, an improved left turn at Canadian Avenue and a cycle parking hub, with phased delivery from 2027 to 2029 (committee report; printed decisions). Lewisham town centre’s £24 million makeover finishes soon. The Lewisham Town Centre Improvement Programme covers public realm, the market’s transformation and the library refurbishment. It is on course for completion in autumn 2026, so expect intermittent works around the high street until then (council committee report).
What it means for you
- Sunday 4 October is the next one to plan around. Buses replace trains between Lewisham, Hither Green and Dartford via Sidcup, and Crofton Park, Catford and Bellingham have no Thameslink trains, with buses via Catford instead.
- Late home from 5 to 8 October? No trains call at Lewisham after about 23:15, and the last train to Hayes is the 22:21 from Charing Cross.
- 10 and 11 October: no Charing Cross or Waterloo East trains all weekend, and New Cross, St Johns, Hither Green, Lee and Grove Park close. Hayes line trains run to Victoria instead.
- 17 and 18 October: buses replace trains from Lewisham to Orpington and Sidcup, but Hayes line trains keep serving Lewisham every 30 minutes.
- Paid extra during the summer Charing Cross closure? The refund form closes on Wednesday 30 September.
- Catford drivers and bus users: Rushey Green has a northbound lane closed at Ringstead Road until 25 October. Expect slower runs through the town centre at busy times.
- Lewisham town centre drivers: Molesworth Street’s westbound lane restrictions now run to 6 November.
- South Circular through Catford: Brownhill Road has temporary lights at Stainton Road until 1 October.
- For anything on a residential street, it is a council or utility job: the register of roadworks will name the works promoter.
