How August scored

Rating Meaning Businesses
5 Very good 35
4 Good 20
3 Generally satisfactory 4
2 Improvement necessary 1
1 or 0 Major or urgent improvement necessary 0

That is 58% at the top score. Across all 2,035 Lewisham businesses on the register with a numerical rating, 1,275 hold a 5, or 63%. August was a little below the borough’s usual standard, mostly because 20 businesses landed on a 4.

The lowest score

London Agege Bread Bakers Ltd, at 32 Deptford High Street, was rated 2 on 20 August. The register breaks the score into three parts:

  • food hygiene and safety: generally satisfactory
  • structural condition of the building: improvement necessary
  • confidence in management: generally satisfactory

So the building, rather than how food was handled, pulled the score down. The register shows no right-to-reply statement from the business and no new rating pending.

Rated 3

Four businesses were rated 3, “generally satisfactory”:

Who got a 5

The top scores ranged from pubs and restaurants to a hospital kitchen and a bowls club pavilion. They include:

Four stallholders at Lewisham Market were also rated 5 on 8 and 10 August. Three businesses on Bromley Hill and Bromley Road, which are on Lewisham’s register despite their Bromley postcodes, scored 5 on 6 August: the Bromley Hill Fish Bar, FM Food Centre and Grillo’s.

Care homes and nurseries

Several places feeding children and older people were inspected. The Swallows on Brownhill Road and the Matron Day Care Centre at Marvels Lane Health Centre both scored 5. Beechcroft Care Home on Brownhill Road and 3 Butterflies Nursery on Albyn Road, Deptford, were rated 4.

September so far

Eight September ratings had reached the register by 2 October, all of them 5. They include Big Cheeks Thai at The Signal pub in Forest Hill, the Hare & Billet on Blackheath, Nest & Vine on Royal Parade, and Home and La Fraternite Guinnene on Deptford High Street. More September inspections will be added as the council processes them.

What it means for you

A rating shows what an inspector found on the day of the visit. Check the register before you order, because a business can be reinspected and rerated.

Businesses that disagree with a rating can appeal within 21 days. They can also publish a right to reply on the register, or ask for a revisit once they have made improvements. The FSA explains how that works.

Several businesses rated in August were home-based or mobile caterers with no public address, and we have not named them. For other everyday information, see our guides to bin collection days and council tax bands.
